Mazda files patents to improve rotary engine efficiency and emissions
Mazda is working to revitalize its rotary engine technology through new patent filings aimed at overcoming historical challenges with emissions and oil consumption. The company is exploring ways to make the Wankel engine more viable for modern regulatory standards.
One key innovation involves a new exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system. This dual-port design directs exhaust gases either to a turbocharger or through an internal engine passage to an EGR cooler. By routing gases through a passage cast inside the engine's structural housing, Mazda can achieve lower temperatures with a smaller, more compact cooler, saving much-needed space.
Additionally, Mazda is addressing oil consumption issues. Previous rotary engines required injecting oil into the combustion chamber to lubricate apex seals, which increased emissions. New patent designs suggest a modified lubrication system that uses centrifugal force to recover some lubricant rather than allowing it all to be burned.
While Mazda has already reintroduced the rotary engine as a range extender in the MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV, these new developments suggest potential future applications where the engine might directly power vehicles through more efficient, high-performance configurations.
