Mazda maintains commitment to internal combustion engines

Mazda is pursuing a multi-solution approach to electrification rather than committing exclusively to battery-electric vehicles. The company intends to continue developing internal combustion engines, citing the continued relevance of gasoline and diesel power in markets such as the United States and Japan.

Moritz Oswald, Project Manager for Product Planning and Co-Creation at Mazda Europe, stated that the company aims to provide the right powertrain for the right customer, noting that global markets are not homogeneous in terms of charging infrastructure, energy mixes, or consumer preferences. This strategy aligns Mazda with other manufacturers like Toyota and BMW that maintain options for conventional engines.

As part of its ongoing engineering efforts, Mazda is developing the Skyactiv-Z engine. This new 2.5-liter four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine is expected to debut in the CX-5 around late 2027, paired with the company’s first independently developed hybrid system to meet strict environmental standards.
