Mazda patents new emissions technology for rotary engines

Mazda has filed a patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for a new exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system designed specifically for Wankel rotary engines. The technology aims to reduce harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, potentially allowing rotary engines to meet stricter global environmental standards.

The proposed system utilizes two different exhaust paths to improve efficiency. Hot exhaust gases from the side port are channeled into a turbocharger to enhance power and torque. Simultaneously, cooler gases from the peripheral port are routed through a compact cooling system before being fed back into the engine intake to lower operating temperatures.

While the patent suggests ongoing research into rotary engines for direct propulsion rather than just range-extender roles, it is not a guarantee of future production. The design's inclusion of a turbocharger indicates the technology may be intended for performance-oriented vehicles.
