Mazda tests new in-house electric SUV prototype in Europe

Mazda is testing a new, fully electric SUV prototype in Europe that utilizes a dedicated electric vehicle platform developed in-house. While the prototype shares design similarities with the large CX-90 SUV, its shorter wheelbase and narrower track suggest a smaller vehicle positioned to compete with models like the Tesla Model Y and Volkswagen ID.4.

Unlike previous electric models developed in partnership with Changan in China, this new vehicle is built on Mazda's proprietary platform. The upcoming model is expected to feature next-generation lithium-ion and solid-state batteries manufactured in Japan, with cylindrical battery cells supplied by Panasonic. Although an earlier launch was anticipated, the release of this new electric model is now projected for the 2027–2029 period.
