Giorgos Mazonakis death investigation: Court lifts telephone privacy

The judicial investigation into the death of singer Giorgos Mazonakis has entered a new phase following a court decision to lift telephone privacy for six mobile phones, a hard drive, and a USB. The investigation covers communications from July 11 to September 10, 2026, and aims to clarify the circumstances surrounding the phlebotomy procedure performed at a clinic in Kolonaki.

Two doctors, a husband and wife, are currently being held in Korydallos prison. The legal defense for the couple has split; the lawyers previously representing both have withdrawn from defending the 56-year-old female doctor to focus solely on her husband, citing the need for differentiated legal strategies. The doctor has appointed Nikos Alexandris as her new counsel. She denies administering any sedative or antidote during the procedure.

Testimonies from clinic staff have provided conflicting accounts. A nurse testified that the doctor instructed staff on what to report to the authorities and claimed that Mazonakis' vein broke during the procedure. Another staff member described the singer as appearing pale and unresponsive during the emergency response. The defense maintains that the doctor is not responsible for the death and suggests that third parties may have pressured Mazonakis into undergoing the treatment.
