Mazovian craftsmanship sees resurgence through technology and EU support
Traditional craftsmanship is experiencing a resurgence in the Mazovia region of Poland, driven by the integration of new technologies and regional government support. Vocational professions such as shoemaking, tinsmithing, and hatmaking are seeing renewed interest due to their high demand in the current labor market.
To support this trend, the Mazovian Voivodeship is providing resources through projects like ‘Zawodowe Mazowsze Przyszłości – innowacyjne kształcenie zawodowe’, funded by European Funds for Mazovia 2021–2027. In the previous school year, 468 vocational students received EU-funded scholarships of 6,980 PLN each. Currently, the Mazovian Chamber of Craft and Entrepreneurship oversees more than 300 training workshops with nearly 1,000 apprentices. These qualifications are recognized throughout the European Union.
A notable example of this industry's evolution is the Sterkowski hat factory in Józefów, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Despite facing challenges from cheap imports in the 1990s, the business has successfully adapted to modern market demands.
