Mazury sailing incidents prompt investigation after severe weather

Authorities in Poland are investigating maritime incidents in the Masurian Lake District caused by severe weather. In one instance on Lake Wigry, strong winds prevented an experienced windsurfer from reaching the shore. Suwałki police water patrols and WOPR rescuers successfully extracted the individual from the water without injury.

In a separate, more serious incident on Lake Seksty, four out of five yachts participating in a sailing course capsized due to sudden wind gusts. Nearly 40 people were involved in the voyage, and one participant sustained injuries requiring medical attention. The capsized vessels subsequently sank.

The District Prosecutor's Office in Pisz has taken supervision over the investigation, which focuses on whether participants were placed in direct danger of loss of life or health. Investigators are specifically examining why the vessels departed from Okartowo despite weather alerts issued on the day of the incident.
