MBA Admissions Guide: CAT Scores, College Selection, and Degree Types

Prospective management students can utilize several frameworks to navigate MBA and PGDM admissions following the Common Admission Test (CAT). Key considerations for selecting an institution include verifying programme recognition, comparing total tuition and living costs, and analyzing placement transparency through median and average salary data rather than relying solely on advertised highest packages.

There are fundamental differences between an MBA and a PGDM. An MBA is a master’s degree awarded by a university or an institution with degree-awarding authority, whereas a PGDM is a postgraduate diploma from an autonomous institute, typically approved by the AICTE. The equivalence between these qualifications is not automatic and depends on specific institutional approvals.

While CAT percentiles help shortlist potential colleges, they do not guarantee admission. Institutions often evaluate additional factors such as sectional scores, academic profiles, work experience, and performance in subsequent selection rounds. In regions like Bhubaneswar, institutions may accept various entrance exams including XAT, CMAT, MAT, or OJEE, necessitating direct verification with individual colleges.
