Mbarara University addresses pharmacy programme recognition dispute
Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) has taken steps to address concerns regarding the professional recognition of its Bachelor of Pharmacy programme. The Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda (PSU) had previously withdrawn its recognition of the course, leading to uncertainty among students.
In response, the university has appointed Dr. Jonans Tusiimire, a registered pharmacist and President of the PSU, as the Acting Head of the Pharmacy Department. Additionally, the university confirmed it has received approval and wage allocation to recruit more academic staff to meet professional standards.
During a parliamentary session, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa clarified that the programme remains accredited by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) for the next four years. Tayebwa noted a potential overlap in the mandates of the PSU and the NCHE and has directed the Minister for Education and Sports to provide a formal statement to Parliament regarding the legal framework governing the matter.
