MBC establishes memorial for weathercaster Oh Yo-anna

MBC has established a memorial space at its headquarters in Sangam-dong, Seoul, to honor the late weathercaster Oh Yo-anna on the second anniversary of her passing. The memorial period is scheduled from September 14 to September 20.

Oh passed away in September 2024 at the age of 28. Following her death, a suicide note and recordings were discovered, alleging she had been subjected to workplace harassment by colleagues. The investigation revealed instances where colleagues reportedly shifted blame for errors onto her or reacted negatively to her professional corrections.

In response to the controversy, MBC formed an investigation committee, terminated the contract of the individual found to have engaged in harassment, and transitioned from a freelance weathercaster system to a permanent ‘weather and climate expert’ system. While the Ministry of Employment and Labor conducted a special inspection and confirmed that harassment exceeding appropriate professional boundaries had occurred, they determined that the Labor Standards Act's specific workplace harassment protections did not apply as she was not classified as a formal employee under that specific law. The bereaved family has pursued civil litigation against one of the identified perpetrators.
