MBDA and Ariane Group vie for European Deep‑Strike missile programme

Europe’s leading air‑defence missile maker MBDA has offered Germany its readiness to develop long‑range deep‑precision strike missiles. Product line leader Paul Houot said the company’s Marine Cruise Missile (MdCN) is the only European system comparable to the US Tomahawk and that a land‑based variant, the “Land Cruise Missile,” is planned for entry into service in 2029 with a range of over 1,000 km.

MBDA proposes that European states join France in further developing the MdCN as an autonomous European solution that can be produced and exported without US approval. Interest from European nations and NATO is high due to concerns over US stock availability.

Ariane Group is also in talks with France and Germany about developing conventional ballistic missiles that could reach 1,000‑2,500 km. Vincent Pery said production in Germany could be possible if a political decision is made. The competing proposals are expected to be discussed at the forthcoming Franco‑German defence council meeting.
