Mbekezeli Mbokazi sidelined for months with serious thigh injury

South African centre‑back Mbekezeli Mbokazi suffered a serious thigh muscle tear during a Chicago Fire training session, according to head coach Gregg Berhalter. The 20‑year‑old was placed on the six‑game injured list and is expected to miss at least six MLS fixtures, the club’s Leagues Cup matches, and the MLS All‑Star Game. Berhalter warned the lay‑off could extend beyond the announced six‑week period, with a likely return only around mid‑September.

Mbokazi’s absence weakens Chicago Fire’s central defence, leaving the team with only three senior centre‑backs available and prompting speculation about recalling youngster Christopher Cupps. The injury also puts his participation in South Africa’s upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in doubt, as he was a key figure in Bafana Bafana’s recent World Cup campaign. Before the injury, Mbokazi had earned the most fan votes for the MLS All‑Star roster and saw his market value rise to €8 million after an impressive debut season.

The club and national team will have to adjust while Mbokazi works toward recovery, with hopes that he can rejoin both squads by the early fall.
