Mbour celebrates Septembre mandingue cultural festival

The Mandingue community of Mbour is organizing the ‘Septembre mandingue’, a cultural event that has become a significant fixture in the coastal city’s annual calendar. The celebration is characterized by increasing attendance each year and serves as a central period for local holidays.

A central element of the festivities is the Kankourang, a sacred mythic figure whose presence is felt through mystical nocturnal appearances, traditional chants, and drumming. These rituals attract purists and initiates, particularly during the week leading up to the main weekend celebrations.

The event draws large crowds of visitors to the Petite Côte, fostering a sense of ‘teranga’ (hospitality) as residents welcome friends and neighbors. The festivities include large communal dinners and various cultural performances that define the summer atmosphere in Mbour.
