Mbya Guaraní community evicted in Misiones, Argentina

On July 28, about 50 police officers entered the Mbya Guaraní settlement Puente Quemado II in the Cañafístola area of Garuhapé, Misiones, to carry out a court‑ordered eviction. The order was issued by Judge Roberto Antonio Sena at the request of timber businessman Alfredo Ruff, who claims the land was unlawfully occupied.

The operation displaced families from a territory whose ancestral occupation has previously been recognized by the national state. Legal challenges to the eviction remain pending, and the community continues to live under threat of further police action. Earlier, police had detained the community leader and others, but they were released after mobilization by indigenous and human‑rights groups.
