Mbya Guaraní community evicted in Misiones, Argentina

On 28 July 2026, police, gendarmerie and judicial officials entered the Puente Quemado II settlement of the Mbya Guaraní people in Misiones Province to enforce an eviction order issued by Judge Roberto Antonio Sena at the request of forest entrepreneur Alfredo Ruff. Seven families were forced out, their homes demolished and crops destroyed; personal belongings were loaded onto a metal‑cage truck belonging to Ruff. Community members reported that police officers offered money to leave, an act the residents rejected.

Subsequently, prosecutor Héctor Daniel Simón ruled the eviction should be nullified, describing it as “extreme institutional gravity” and emphasizing the need to respect indigenous territorial rights protected by the Argentine Constitution and ILO Convention 169. He ordered the judge’s decision to be reviewed and, if upheld, to be appealed to the provincial Court of Appeals.
