CAF Champions League: MC Alger and Horoya AC reach group stage

Several African football clubs have secured qualification for the CAF Champions League group stage following intense preliminary rounds.

Algerian side MC Alger completed a dramatic comeback against Nigeria’s Enugu Rangers. After losing the first leg 2-0, MC Alger won the return match 3-0 in Algiers with goals from Chahreddine Boukholda, Mohamed Saliou Bangoura, and Soufiane Bayazid, progressing 3-2 on aggregate. The defeat leaves Nigeria without a representative in the group stage.

Guinean club Horoya AC also advanced to the group stage after defeating Sudan’s Al-Merrikh SC. Following a 1-0 win in the first leg and a 1-0 loss in the return match held in Kigali, Rwanda, Horoya won the penalty shootout 5-3. This marks the club’s return to the group stage for the first time since 2022.

Other notable results include RS Berkane of Morocco and Espérance de Tunis of Tunisia advancing to the group stages. Meanwhile, defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns were eliminated by Angola’s Wiliete SC.
