MC Monica reports ₦1.8 million loss following fraudulent traffic fine scam
Nigerian comedian and businessman MC Monica has reported the loss of approximately ₦1.8 million from his Wema Bank account following a fraudulent transaction. The incident began when the comedian received a message regarding an alleged Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) traffic violation.
MC Monica stated that he clicked a link provided in the message and authorized a ₦5,000 fine payment. However, he claims that despite only generating a One-Time Password (OTP) for the ₦5,000 transaction, nearly ₦2 million was subsequently withdrawn from his account. He reported that his account officer informed him that no action could be taken regarding the missing funds.
The incident has sparked online debate regarding data protection and the security of banking information in Nigeria. Wema Bank has issued a general advisory for customers to remain vigilant against unsolicited messages and to report suspected fraudulent transactions immediately.
