McDonald’s adapts menu to accommodate GLP-1 medication users
McDonald’s is adapting its menu strategy to account for the rising use of GLP-1 medications, such as Ozempic and Wegovy. Following investor discussions, the company is exploring options that prioritize higher protein content and greater portion flexibility to cater to customers experiencing reduced appetites.
Proposed menu concepts include chicken bowls, grilled chicken snack wraps, and burger bowls. This shift follows data indicating that households using GLP-1 drugs may reduce spending at fast-food and limited-service restaurants by approximately 8% within six months of starting medication. Other major chains, including Chipotle, Shake Shack, and Olive Garden, are also implementing high-protein or smaller-portion menu items to address changing consumer dietary habits.
