McDonald's barred unhoused man from cooling off in Kentucky

A Lexington, Kentucky, resident reported that an unhoused man was barred from entering a McDonald's property on Stanton Way, despite being purchased a meal and a cold drink by a local woman.

Abby Welch shared the experience on Facebook, noting that she and her boyfriend bought food for the man after seeing him sweating outside in the heat. Welch expressed frustration that the man was not permitted to enter the establishment to cool down and eat his meal, questioning how the country can improve if vulnerable populations are treated this way.

While McDonald's corporate materials state that locations should provide a ‘safe, respectful and inclusive environment’ and treat people with dignity, the company does not have a public policy regarding whether unhoused individuals may stay inside its restaurants. The incident highlights the health risks faced by those without stable housing during periods of extreme heat, where access to air-conditioned indoor spaces is critical for safety.
