McDonald’s begins construction on Enmore Road site in Newtown
McDonald’s has commenced construction on a new restaurant on Enmore Road in Newtown, Sydney, replacing an existing Oporto location. The company utilized a fast-track complying development certificate pathway through the Inner West Council to secure the site.
This move follows previous unsuccessful attempts by the fast-food chain to establish a presence on nearby King Street, which faced significant opposition from local residents, business owners, and NSW Police. Critics argued that a McDonald’s presence would erode the unique, alternative character of the Newtown-Enmore nightlife precinct.
McDonald’s recently abandoned a court case against the City of Sydney regarding the refusal of a different proposal located approximately 500 metres away. The company’s expansion into the area reflects a broader trend of fast-food chains seeking new outlets in local shopping strips despite community pushback.
