McDonald's CEO links adult Happy Meal purchases to GLP-1 drug use

McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski has identified a link between the rising use of GLP-1 weight-loss medications and a shift in consumer purchasing habits. In a recent interview with the Harvard Business Review, Kempczinski noted that adults are increasingly opting for Happy Meals over larger items like the Big Mac.

Kempczinski explained that GLP-1 drugs, such as Ozempic and Wegovy, reduce appetite and calorie consumption by slowing digestion and signaling fullness to the brain. He noted that users typically see a decrease in daily intake of approximately 700 to 800 calories. Anecdotally, some customers have expressed a preference for the smaller portion sizes offered by Happy Meals.

The CEO also observed that individuals using these medications often seek higher protein intake. He stated that this trend aligns with McDonald's menu capabilities, noting that the company is ‘protein forward’ and has the ability to continue innovating in that area.
