McDonald’s expansion in Nardò sparks local political debate
The planned opening of a McDonald’s in Nardò, Italy, has sparked a political debate between local government and opposition groups. Mayor Pippi Mellone has presented the project as an urban redevelopment initiative that will transform a degraded area, including the demolition of an abandoned building and the creation of a children’s playground.
The project includes significant public infrastructure, such as 1,465 square meters dedicated to green spaces and public parking, as well as a new roundabout to improve road safety. The administration also expects the development to generate new employment opportunities and provide a substantial urban development contribution to the municipality.
However, the political movement Forza Nuova has launched a petition to block the opening. The group argues that the fast-food chain threatens local culinary traditions and will harm local businesses, including farms, rotisseries, and restaurants. They characterize the arrival of the American giant as a symbol of “disposable cuisine” that conflicts with the region's local production.
