McDonald’s expansion in Zurich faces local opposition

Residents and local businesses in Zurich are organizing to oppose a planned McDonald’s restaurant at the Steinfels-Areal near Hardbrücke. The proposed single-story location is intended to feature 161 seats and offer take-away and delivery services.

Opponents have raised concerns regarding noise, littering, and increased traffic from delivery services. A primary point of contention is the proposed operating hours, which include weekend shifts lasting until 6:00 AM. Residents argue that the area, once industrial, has transitioned into a family-friendly neighborhood with schools and daycare centers.

Local critics are currently using chat groups to coordinate legal actions, encouraging neighbors to file requests for inspection of the building application documents by the September 2 deadline. This is a preliminary step toward filing formal objections with the building appeals court should the city approve the project.
