McGill University law student faces threats after defending convicted murderer

A McGill University law student, Amy Haysom, reports receiving online death threats after publicly supporting Jeffrey Ewert, a convicted murderer who was recently taken back into custody. Haysom stated she developed a friendship with Ewert after meeting him on the first day of law school in September, noting that Ewert had disclosed his criminal history to her and had notified his parole officer of their acquaintance as required by his release conditions.

Ewert, currently in his 60s, was convicted in the 1980s of second-degree murder and attempted murder in British Columbia. His crimes involved violent attacks against two women, including a 15-year-old girl. His conditional release was recently suspended, returning him to custody. While some students have petitioned for Ewert to be removed from the university, others have signed petitions supporting his right to remain.
