McHenry Police Detain Man Following False Shooting and Murder Claim

On Friday, August 7, 2026, the McHenry Police Department responded to a 911 call reporting shots fired and a claim that a 40‑year‑old man had killed his mother at a residence on the 3200 block of Hunter Path in McHenry, Illinois. The caller also reported that the man had fired a handgun into the air. Police, assisted by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS) SWAT team, established a perimeter around the home.

The subject refused to exit, prompting a two‑hour standoff. After investigators determined the reports of additional armed individuals were false, the man voluntarily left the residence. He was taken into custody without incident and transported to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital for treatment. A handgun was recovered as evidence. Police indicated the subject may have been experiencing a mental‑health crisis and the incident remains under investigation, with possible criminal charges pending.
