McKinney City Council approves new Islamic center
The McKinney City Council voted 7–0 to approve a preliminary site plan for a new Islamic center in McKinney, Texas. The project, proposed by the McKinney Islamic Association, is planned for approximately 5.5 acres at Virginia Parkway and Crutcher Crossing.
The approved development includes a 15,000-square-foot mosque, a 10,000-square-foot classroom building, and a 7,000-square-foot gym. This revised proposal is smaller than a previous 2024 plan that sought a zoning modification; the current application complies with existing Planned Development zoning, which city staff identified as a ministerial function for the council to approve.
The decision followed a contentious public meeting where over 150 people expressed opinions. Opponents raised concerns regarding traffic, neighborhood impact, and religious law, while supporters advocated for religious freedom.
