McKinsey and BCG utilize Minto Pyramid Principle to drive business models

The Minto Pyramid Principle, developed by Barbara Minto, serves as a foundational communication framework for the world’s leading strategy consulting firms, specifically McKinsey & Company and Boston Consulting Group (BCG). While often viewed merely as a presentation style, the framework functions as a core component of their respective business models.

McKinsey & Company utilizes the pyramid principle as a standardized operating procedure. The firm’s organizational structure and service delivery are built around this top-down architecture, where conclusions are presented first, followed by supporting logical reasoning. This approach allows for a highly scalable and replicable service engine.

In contrast, BCG employs a different model that often prioritizes proprietary frameworks and visual metaphors, such as the Growth Share Matrix, over linear argumentation. While McKinsey focuses on structured, top-down communication protocols, BCG’s model tends to utilize its intellectual property library to manage client engagements through diagnostic phases.
