McKinsey report: 17% of global farmers adopt generative AI

A McKinsey & Co report titled ‘Global Farmer Insights 2026’ reveals that 17% of farmers worldwide are currently using generative AI. Adoption rates vary significantly by region: Latin America leads at 26%, followed by North America at 23%, Europe at 13%, and Asia at 7%.

Despite the usage, only 4% of farmers globally pay for these AI tools, with the majority relying on free versions or trials. In North America, 10% of farmers pay for AI services, whereas only 1% do so in Europe. This trend suggests that software providers must demonstrate clear, measurable value to convert users into paying customers, particularly in regions with tight profit margins.

Unlike heavy agricultural machinery or robotics, AI software requires lower capital investment, making it an attractive option for farmers looking to preserve cash flow during periods of economic volatility, such as fluctuating commodity prices and high input costs for energy and fertilizer. Approximately 75% of respondents expect generative AI to impact their operations within the next three to five years.
