Formula 1 addresses FIA software bugs and McLaren performance issues

Formula 1 faces scrutiny following technical failures during the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. The FIA confirmed that a software anomaly caused cars to lose power during formation laps, leading to a 50-minute delay. The governing body stated the issue stemmed from electronic management of power units in specific operating conditions and pledged to ‘strengthen’ software testing and verification processes for future races.

Drivers expressed significant frustration with the incident. Carlos Sainz criticized the increasing complexity of modern F1 engines and braking systems, while Lewis Hamilton noted that both the FIA and younger drivers have become overly cautious regarding wet-weather racing. Hamilton emphasized the importance of the challenge provided by difficult conditions, contrasting it with the current cautious approach.

Separately, McLaren is addressing a persistent performance issue affecting Lando Norris. The team identified a deficit in straight-line speed, likely caused by a fuel injection system problem. McLaren has implemented changes to auxiliary components of the Mercedes power unit in an attempt to resolve the issue ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix, as Norris seeks to recover from recent performance drops.
