McLaren drivers maintain harmony amid challenging 2026 F1 season

McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella has praised the continued 'harmony' between drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri despite a challenging 2026 Formula 1 season. The new technical regulations, which introduce a 50/50 power split between electric and combustion engines, have significantly disrupted driving styles and performance levels across the grid.

Oscar Piastri described the season as a period of adaptation, noting that the radical changes in power units and downforce have forced him to find new ways to extract performance. His season has been marked by inconsistent results, including reliability issues in China and a difficult start in Australia, though he secured podium finishes in Suzuka and Miami.

Lando Norris, the defending world champion, secured a victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix before the summer break. While Norris remains highly competitive, he currently trails championship leader Andrea Kimihi Antonelli. Former F1 engineer Rob Smedley noted a difference in how the two drivers discuss their long-term futures at McLaren, suggesting Piastri's less vocal commitment could theoretically influence future career moves, though both drivers remain under long-term contracts.
