McLaren confirms first high-performance hybrid SUV by 2030
McLaren has officially confirmed the development of its first SUV, a project internally codenamed P47. The high-performance vehicle is expected to enter the market by 2030 and is intended to compete with luxury models such as the Lamborghini Urus, Ferrari Purosangue, and Aston Martin DBX.
To support this strategic shift and expand engineering and manufacturing capabilities in the UK, the company is planning a £500 million investment. While McLaren has historically focused on lightweight, two-door supercars, the new model will emphasize a multi-propulsion strategy. The SUV is expected to feature a hybrid powertrain, potentially combining a V8 biturbo engine with electric units and all-wheel drive, marking a departure from the brand's traditional rear-wheel-drive configurations.
Chief Operating Officer Michael Straughan stated that the vehicle must remain recognizable as a McLaren, maintaining core pillars of lightness and carbon fiber performance. The expected price point is anticipated to exceed £200,000.
