McLaren to invest £500m in UK expansion and first performance SUV

McLaren Automotive has announced a £500 million investment to expand its manufacturing and engineering operations in the United Kingdom. Supported by L’IMAD, a sovereign investor from Abu Dhabi, the funding aims to facilitate the development of the company’s first-ever performance SUV, expected to launch before 2030.

The investment will fund a new vehicle assembly facility in the UK and expand existing sites, including the McLaren Production Centre in Woking and the Composites Technology Centre in South Yorkshire. This expansion is projected to create at least 1,000 direct and indirect jobs by 2032 and could potentially double the manufacturing workforce.

A key component of this strategic shift is the move toward in-house production. For the first time, McLaren will design and build its own future powertrains, including two new engines and transmissions, to support its hybrid engine strategy. CEO Nick Collins stated the investment provides a platform to grow and remain competitive while delivering products in a “McLaren way.”
