McLaren to invest £500m in UK hybrid technology and manufacturing

McLaren Automotive has announced a £500 million ($670 million) investment programme to expand its manufacturing and engineering operations in the United Kingdom. Supported by shareholder L’IMAD, a sovereign investor from Abu Dhabi, the initiative focuses on strengthening the company’s hybrid technology strategy.

For the first time in its history, McLaren will design and manufacture its own engines and transmissions in-house. The plan includes the development of two new powertrains to support hybrid models and the production of a newly confirmed performance sport utility vehicle (SUV).

The investment will fund a new vehicle assembly facility and expand existing sites, including the McLaren Production Centre in Woking and the McLaren Composites Technology Centre in South Yorkshire. The company also utilizes its design centre in Bicester and a testing facility in the Midlands to form an integrated UK operation.

By 2032, the programme is expected to create at least 1,000 new direct and indirect jobs, effectively doubling McLaren’s UK manufacturing workforce. The expansion is also anticipated to support up to 3,000 additional roles within the broader supply chain.
