McLaren to invest £500m in UK for new performance SUV

McLaren Automotive has announced a £500 million investment in its United Kingdom operations, aimed at expanding manufacturing, engineering, and research and development capabilities. The funding, supported by Abu Dhabi-based sovereign investor L’IMAD, will facilitate the development of a new generation of vehicles, most notably the company’s first high-performance SUV.

This new SUV, internally referred to as the P47, is expected to be a four-door, five-seat hybrid model, with a projected market launch around 2028. As part of this strategic shift, McLaren will also begin manufacturing engines and transmissions in-house for the first time, moving away from total reliance on external suppliers.

The investment will impact several UK sites, including the production centre in Woking, the composites technology centre in South Yorkshire, and new facilities in Bicester and the Midlands. The expansion is projected to create at least 1,000 direct and indirect jobs by 2032 and is expected to double the company’s manufacturing workforce.
