McLaren boss slams Norris-Piastri collision in Singapore Sprint
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has labeled a collision between teammates Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri during the Singapore Grand Prix sprint race as ‘unacceptable’. The incident occurred on the final lap of the 20-lap sprint at the Marina Bay Street Circuit when Norris attempted an inside overtake at Turn 5, resulting in contact that forced Piastri to retire and caused significant damage to his car, including a required gearbox replacement.
While race stewards ruled the contact a racing incident with no single driver being predominantly at fault, the team expressed deep frustration over the loss of potential points in their Constructors' Championship battle. Norris, who finished eighth in the sprint, later apologized to the team and Piastri, stating, ‘I should never have tried it in the first place... I must think about the team I represent more than myself.’
In the main Grand Prix, Norris finished fourth, though he noted that McLaren currently appears to be the ‘worst of the top four’ teams in terms of pace compared to Ferrari and Red Bull. The team is now focused on internal discussions to reinforce the ‘Papaya Rules,’ emphasizing that team interests must always supersede individual driver egos.
