McLaren faces performance shortfall at Silverstone British Grand Prix

McLaren showed promise in the sprint race at Silverstone, with Lando Norris finishing third, but the weekend turned challenging in the main qualifying session. Norris qualified sixth and teammate Oscar Piastri eighth, far behind the pole time, highlighting a clear performance gap.

In the race, Norris managed to secure fourth place, benefitting from incidents affecting rivals such as Max Verstappen and George Russell. Piastri suffered front‑wing damage early on and finished outside the points. Team principal Andrea Stella described the result as “above the car’s true potential” and noted that the team’s aerodynamic efficiency and power‑unit optimisation remain behind Ferrari and Mercedes by two to three months.

Technical issues compounded the difficulties: a problematic front‑right brake on Norris’s car, windy conditions reducing grip, and an overall deficit in aerodynamic downforce were cited as key factors. Stella warned that substantial development work is required before the next race in Belgium, emphasizing that closing the gap to the leading teams is urgent.
