Charles Leclerc secures surprise Ferrari win at Silverstone

Charles Leclerc won the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, defying pre‑race forecasts that Ferrari would lag Mercedes by half a second. The Monegasque driver crossed the line ahead of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, giving Ferrari its first double‑podium of the 2026 season and narrowing the constructors’ gap with Mercedes to 78 points. Leclerc said it was “a particularly surprising weekend for the whole team… we were much better than expected and actually won.”

Meanwhile, McLaren’s performance struggled in the same event. Oscar Piastri identified the changing weather and wind at Silverstone as key factors exposing the MCL40’s weaknesses. “I think the conditions at Silverstone have definitely exposed where we are weak,” he told reporters. He added that the car is competitive only when grip is consistent, but in variable conditions it falls off the pace, a pattern also seen in Canada and Monaco. The team now aims to broaden the MCL40’s operating window to improve stability in fluctuating conditions.
