McLaren's Stella identifies mental hurdle for Oscar Piastri
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has identified a specific challenge facing driver Oscar Piastri regarding his performance with the MCL40. Stella noted that Piastri is currently “driving and thinking at the same time,” a mental state that leads to slower decision-making and ultimately slower lap times.
This struggle is linked to the characteristics of the current generation of Formula 1 cars. While Piastri previously excelled in high-speed corners with high grip levels, the current technical regulations—featuring reduced aerodynamic downforce and narrower tires—have moved the car outside of his comfort zone.
Stella emphasized the need for better synchronization between the driver and the car to ensure driving becomes an instinctive rather than a calculated process. The team aims to improve qualifying positions and race starts to ensure Piastri remains closer to podium contention, similar to the performance levels seen by teammate Lando Norris.
