McLean Hospital to launch metabolic psychiatry center with $20 million grant

McLean Hospital, part of the Mass General Brigham system, is establishing a new center dedicated to metabolic psychiatry. The initiative is supported by a $20 million investment from the Baszucki Group to advance clinical care, research, and medical education.

Metabolic psychiatry focuses on the relationship between metabolic health and psychiatric conditions. Research suggests that metabolic therapies, such as the ketogenic diet, may assist in treating disorders including depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. The new center aims to standardize medical training and develop evidence-based protocols through the Global Network to Advance Metabolic Psychiatry.

The funding was provided by the Baszucki family, inspired by their son Matthew Baszucki’s experience with bipolar disorder. The Baszucki Group is led by David Baszucki, the founder and CEO of Roblox.
