McMaster University study reveals rising mental health issues in Canada
A study from McMaster University reveals a significant increase in mental health disturbances in Canada. Based on data from nearly 35,000 Canadians aged 15 and older, the research published in Psychiatry Research indicates that one in six Canadians experiences a mood, anxiety, or substance-related disorder.
Compared to 2012 data, the likelihood of mood and anxiety disorders has increased 2.5 times. For individuals facing co-occurring mental health and substance use issues, the probability has nearly doubled. The study highlights that young people aged 15 to 24 are particularly vulnerable, with nearly one in three experiencing such disturbances.
Researchers suggest these trends may stem from social changes and the effects of the pandemic. The study advocates for an integrated healthcare response, particularly for women and youth, by bridging the gap between mental health services and substance use support.
