MCMC investigates Facebook account for allegedly insulting Sultan of Selangor

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has opened an investigation into content uploaded via a Facebook account named “Vikke Lee”. The posts are suspected of containing extreme offensive elements and touching upon sensitive issues regarding race, religion, and the monarchy (3R).

The content is believed to insult the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah. As part of the investigation, authorities conducted a statement recording at the Sri Petaling Police Station and seized a mobile phone and one SIM card from the individual involved.

The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. If convicted, the individual could face a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment for up to two years, or both. MCMC emphasized that it takes the spread of false information or insults against royal institutions seriously, particularly content that could jeopardize social harmony.
