MCP Server Landscape Expands to Over 10,000 Public Instances with New Marketplace Comparisons

Anthropic reported in December 2025 that more than 10,000 public Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers are active, generating over 97 million monthly SDK downloads. The servers fall into five distinct families—point‑solution implementations for individual tools such as Postgres, GitHub, Slack, Stripe and Salesforce—each with specific strengths and constraints, including unmaintained archives, scope limits and supply‑chain risks.

Gartner forecasts that 40 % of agentic AI projects will be cancelled by the end of 2027 and that 25 % of enterprise generative‑AI applications will suffer at least five minor security incidents per year by 2028, underscoring the importance of server selection.

A separate analysis of MCP server marketplaces compares four providers. PulseMCP lists the largest catalog (21,000+ servers) but offers no security auditing. Smithery (3,000+ servers) and Glama (2,000+ servers) provide easy installation or algorithmic quality scores, respectively, without audits. MarketNow (8,764 servers) distinguishes itself by running a six‑layer Sentinel security pipeline, issuing signed certificates for each server, though its sandbox coverage is currently limited and its catalog smaller than PulseMCP’s.
