MD Anderson study finds gut microbiome reshaping doubles chemotherapy delivery

Researchers at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center published a study in Nature Materials showing that a short course of antibiotics can reshape the gut microbiome and markedly improve the performance of nanoparticle‑based chemotherapies. By reducing specific gut bacteria, bile‑acid signaling to liver Kupffer cells drops, causing these cells to clear fewer nanomedicine particles. In preclinical models this intervention roughly doubled the circulation time of the drugs, increased their accumulation in tumors and extended survival across several cancer types, including breast, ovarian and pancreatic cancers. The effect was driven by the microbiome itself rather than the immune system, suggesting a new, biology‑focused strategy for enhancing cancer drug delivery. "For decades, scientists have tried to address how aggressively the liver filters out nanomedicine," said co‑author Wen Jiang, "our research shows that the host’s biology, specifically the gut microbiome, is just as important as the particle design."
