MD Anderson trial finds local therapy adds no survival benefit in NSCLC
Results from the Phase III LONESTAR trial, presented at the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer World Conference on Lung Cancer, indicate that adding local consolidative therapy (LCT) after induction treatment with nivolumab and ipilimumab does not improve survival outcomes for patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
The randomized trial, conducted at MD Anderson Cancer Center, evaluated whether reducing residual tumor burden through radiation or surgery after dual immunotherapy could improve systemic disease control. The study included 166 immunotherapy-naive patients. While the addition of LCT was found to be feasible, it failed to improve overall survival or progression-free survival in the general population or specifically among those with oligometastatic disease.
Additionally, research published in Nature Communications regarding the Phase II CheckMate 650 trial examined the use of nivolumab plus ipilimumab for chemotherapy-refractory metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer.
