MDR simulates broadcast blackout to protest AfD media policies

The public broadcaster MDR staged a dramatic broadcast interruption in Sachsen-Anhalt to highlight the potential consequences of the AfD winning the upcoming state election. During a news segment, the station simulated a total loss of signal, using silence and black screens to illustrate what might happen if the party implements its proposed media policies.

The AfD’s government program includes an immediate measure to terminate state broadcasting treaties and abolish the mandatory broadcasting fee (Rundfunkbeitrag). The party proposes replacing the current system with a “constitutionally compliant basic offering,” while moving services such as sports and entertainment to voluntary, paid subscription models.

MDR Director Ralf Ludwig noted that while the broadcaster would remain accessible in other states due to its multi-state structure, the regional programming for Sachsen-Anhalt would be lost. He emphasized that many citizens are unaware of the legal and practical implications of such a termination.
