Meadowbrook Gardens residents protest GPL transmission line works

Residents of Meadowbrook Gardens are raising health and safety concerns regarding the installation of gas-to-energy transmission lines by Guyana Power and Light (GPL). The community group has called for a suspension of works, citing potential electrical safety hazards and the proximity of infrastructure to residential properties.

The residents highlighted concerns regarding long-term exposure to electromagnetic fields, referencing the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classification of extremely low-frequency magnetic fields as Group 2B, or ‘possibly carcinogenic to humans.’

The Meadowbrook Gardens Community Group expressed disappointment over the resumption of construction, alleging that GPL had previously committed to halting works along the disputed section. GPL leadership has not yet provided a formal response to these specific community concerns.
