Okanagan resident develops livestock evacuation app after wildfire rescues
Meagan Bucar, a resident of Coldstream, British Columbia, is developing a mobile application to improve the coordination of livestock evacuations during wildfires. The initiative follows her direct involvement in rescue efforts during the Bradley Creek and Bald Range wildfires in the Okanagan region this August.
During the Bradley Creek wildfire, Bucar responded to calls for help by driving into the fire zone with a horse trailer to assist in animal rescues. While she successfully helped lead a convoy of trailers out of the zone, she noted the difficulty of coordinating with other spontaneous responders and the inability to reach certain areas once highways were closed.
Following subsequent rescue calls during the Bald Range wildfire, Bucar identified a need for better communication between those with transport capabilities and those needing assistance. The proposed app aims to connect people with trailers to those in need of livestock evacuation, potentially reducing the chaos experienced during emergency wildfire events.
