Mealhada Municipality demands immediate action from ERSUC over waste collection failures

The Mealhada Municipality has formally demanded that ERSUC immediately restore normalcy to selective waste collection services. Mayor António Jorge Franco expressed “profunda preocupação” regarding the worsening service over recent weeks, noting that recycling bins, particularly glass containers, remain full for extended periods.

The accumulation of waste has led to refuse being left outside containers, creating issues for public sanitation, the municipality's image, and citizen trust in the recycling system. Due to the lack of an adequate response, the local government stated it has been forced to use its own resources to remove accumulated waste, a responsibility it argues does not belong to the municipality.

Mealhada officials noted that these difficulties are not isolated to their municipality. Similar issues were recently discussed within the Intermunicipal Council of the Coimbra Metropolitan Region, where several municipalities reported comparable problems. Consequently, a joint formal complaint is being prepared to demand urgent corrective measures from ERSUC.
