Measles cases in Turkey rise to over 1,000
Measles cases in Turkey have reached 1,103 during the first nine months of 2024, surpassing critical thresholds. This increase follows a global trend of rising measles infections, including recent emergency declarations in New York, USA.
Medical experts, including Dr. Gökhan Erdoğan of the Gaziantep Family Physicians Association and Professor Esin Davutoğlu Şenol from Gazi University, have raised alarms regarding the situation. Dr. Erdoğan emphasized the importance of verifying vaccination records and warned against misinformation on social media, specifically addressing debunked claims linking the MMR vaccine to autism.
Professor Şenol noted that the rise in cases may be driven by gaps in health management and a decline in vaccination rates. She suggested that actual vaccine refusal rates might be higher than official data indicates, pointing to a lack of strategic protection plans and administrative regulations to address the growing public health threat.
