Measles cases rise in US regions amid low vaccination rates
Health officials in the United States are reporting rising measles cases linked to low vaccination rates in several regions. In Chautauqua County, New York, officials confirmed the first lab-verified case in over 30 years. Public Health Director Lacey Wilson noted that while countywide vaccination rates remain high, specific areas like Ellington show rates as low as 9 to 10 percent. Officials warned that the actual number of cases may be higher than confirmed reports due to potential unconfirmed infections through association.
In Wisconsin, an outbreak across Iowa, Lafayette, Grant, and Vernon counties has resulted in 158 confirmed and six probable infections. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services highlighted that low MMR vaccination rates in certain counties, such as Vernon at 42 percent, have facilitated the rapid spread of the virus. Health teams are currently investigating connections between new cases and the ongoing outbreak, while local departments work to increase vaccine access through schools and proactive outreach to communities with lower preventive healthcare usage.
